Creating Comic Book Art for The Mythicals with Hojo on The Hump Day Show
Two weeks ago, I joined The Hump Day Show and connected with Hojo, the creator of The Mythicals (known as @Hojo on X). Just minutes before we went live, I reached out to Hojo to learn more about his characters. I asked him to describe what The Mythicals characters look like and if there was a main character I could draw for a quick sketch. Hojo promptly sent me a vibrant character collage, which sparked my inspiration.
From that collage, I quickly sketched a layout featuring a cool wolf, a fiery girl, and a striking military-style character. Blending these elements with a bold, 90s-style comic book moon created a dynamic composition that practically drew itself. The retro comic book aesthetic tied it all together, making the artwork pop.
Bringing the Artwork to Life
Today, in a productive post-Memorial Day creative haze, I dedicated solid time to finishing this Mythicals artwork while multitasking on a support call. Using black India ink and a crow quill pen, I crafted the piece with precision, adding just a touch of brushwork for broader black areas. The result is a bold, hand-drawn comic book illustration that captures the essence of Hojo’s characters.
