BJ TRINIDAD - HIGHLAND HIGHSCHOOL, NJ

The Wake-Up Call

After dominating the Lewis Middle School Halloween Banner contest for two consecutive years, Peter entered Highlands High as a freshman, brimming with confidence as the school’s newest art prodigy. However, his self-assuredness was soon challenged by whispers of a senior named BJ Trinidad, a legendary figure in the Highlands art scene. The art teacher, Ms. Connie Wagner, frequently cited BJ as the gold standard for aspiring artists. Murmurs among students painted BJ as a creative genius, with tales of his dozens of original characters and unparalleled talent. Intimidated yet intrigued, Peter felt an urgent need to witness BJ’s work and meet the artist behind the legend.

The Senior’s Masterpiece

Throughout his freshman year, Peter caught fleeting glimpses of BJ’s art—sketches left in the Highlands art room or pieces displayed by Ms. Wagner. The pinnacle of BJ’s portfolio was The Black Mural, a massive black canvas showcasing an urban scene populated by over 30 unique characters. Rendered with bold black outlines, vibrant colored pencils, and exaggerated proportions, the mural was a testament to BJ’s raw imagination. While it lacked the technical precision of formal art training, its sheer creativity left Peter in awe. The mural wasn’t just art; it was a bold declaration of BJ’s unstudied genius, making Peter question his own skills and approach to art.

The Unexpected Return

After BJ graduated, he occasionally returned to Highlands to visit Ms. Wagner, his biggest supporter. During one such visit, Peter seized the opportunity to ask BJ about his art, particularly the video game concept tied to his characters. BJ’s response was a shock: “Nothing.” He had no ongoing art projects, no game development, and no prospects in the creative industry. Instead, BJ revealed he had become the top-performing salesman in the region, selling products—perhaps for a company like AT&T, though the details were vague. This revelation hit Peter hard. How could someone with such extraordinary talent, whose work was so celebrated, abandon their craft entirely? BJ’s story became a sobering lesson for Peter about the fragility of artistic ambition and the unpredictable paths life can take.

The Path: A Haunting Creative Pursuit

As Peter began his job at Sign Pros, a persistent idea took root, shadowing his daily routine. Each morning and evening, his commute forced him to pass Highland Regional High School, stirring memories of BJ, a friend who used to pop into the art room long after graduation. Where was BJ now? What had become of him? In an era when social media was weaving a web of global connectivity, making nearly everyone discoverable, BJ remained elusive, a ghost in the digital age.

Haunted by these unanswered questions and the vivid memory of BJ’s artistic influence, Peter resolved to recreate BJ’s work from memory. Armed with materials grabbed from a nearby CVS or Rite Aid, he transformed his mornings at Sign Pros into a ritual of creation. This project, dubbed The Path, became a bridge between past and present, a tribute to a lost connection, and a testament to the enduring power of art to process absence and memory.
