RESOURCES: COMIC BOOK INKING

The 1997 film Chasing Amy thrust comic book inkers into the cultural lexicon, often portraying their role as underappreciated or trivial. This perception was amplified when Marvel and DC, through their Amalgam Comics collaboration, released Thorion, penciled by John Romita Jr. The issue was digitally scanned and pre-pressed for coloring, deliberately bypassing the inking stage. This decision by two of the industry’s biggest publishers marked a turning point, signaling a shift toward streamlined production processes that sidelined traditional inkers. Since 1997, American comic book inkers have faced increasing challenges, as digital workflows and evolving industry practices continue to diminish their role.

AKAPAD University is dedicated to preserving the traditional art of comic book inking, a cornerstone of American cultural heritage now threatened by extinction. The rise of digital comic production, particularly the pervasive use of digital tablets, has diminished the tactile and artistic significance of this craft. As paper becomes an inconvenience and traditional brushes feel foreign to a new generation, AKAPAD University stands as a bulwark against this legacy-erasing shift. Committed to upholding the integrity of inking, the university is prepared to fight for its survival, no matter the cost.
