Around this time I searched for a theme for a sketchbook series — something in the lower part of the spectrum that could be formatted as a book or even a zine. What I settled on was a weird combination of my love of Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards, Brian Froud’s Faeries (who did have a fully fledged art book), and a Black Sabbath song that always resonated with me from its oddness alone.
Starting here, I answered the question and pulled in everything Brian Froud and as much from Wizards as possible. In my mind, with this attempt I was putting a fresh spin on a subject I felt had little spin up until this point. It was time to innovate — and I was there.
To me, this series — as much of a failure as it was — still represents my everlasting desire to add to something. Your responsibility to draw is also a responsibility to innovate and experiment with elements yet to be seen. Long series or short series, if the plan lands on this runway, it’s a success on that level alone.
NOTE: A Photoshop painting version of this drawing was completed. At the time I was deciding between keeping this series as black and white or fully computer painted. However, this version was lost with a hard drive failure or a transfer failure while record keeping.
