Am I in the mood for a Six String Samurai Project?

I’ve hesitated for a long time to write up articles like this. Well, it’s Monday and the hesitation is over — sunk, buried into the mat as if it called Prime Time Mike Tyson a sissy. Let’s just say my hesitation is on the mat, so…….

Recently, thanks to the power and availability of YouTube, I was finally able to watch Six String Samurai in its entirety — a film that has been on my radar since it was first written about, all the way back in 1995. The upload I was lucky enough to watch was a bit skewed; it looked a bit stretched out. I could not let this bother me. I had to watch this film no matter what. It had been long enough.
Now I’m not here to comment on the quality of the film — that’s what the Film Buff Podcast is for. But to maybe save you a little bit of time, it’s a spectacular feat. This filmgoing experience moved me so much my mind started to wander, jump, and leap. I could not help myself in imagining products of this film, all within the premise that it was more successful, that it truly caught on and became the landmark independent film it should have become. Yes, the film is that good.
FIRST OFF
I imagined importing the movie, then adjusting its squash and stretch to take away the circus mirror skewing, and reuploading it. Why? Because the world deserves a 100% version of this movie.
From there, the true ideas emerged — you know, the ones only obsessive film-freak designer/production guys like myself come up with.
WHAT IF……………
This was a black and white movie? It might help with the tone, help the audience fall into it, and create a more locked-in world for this film. I love the black and white versions of Fury Road and Justice League. Nightmare Alley not so much, but it’s a version of movies that I always embrace when filmmakers are bold enough to do it. In many cases I prefer the black and white version, especially for fantasy-driven films, and the similarity between Fury Road and Six String Samurai is there.
THEN………
Once it’s in black and white, what about adding more blood and splatter to crank up the viral appeal of the action? I have no idea what the rating of this movie is, but let’s make it as R as possible.
I understand fans often lean towards turning a property they enjoy into something more mature and adult — you know, to excuse why they’re watching something directed towards IPA-loving imbeciles. Sure, make it more mature because it worked for Power Rangers and Transformers.
I NEED TO DRAW THIS STUFF…….
So much of this movie triggered my illustration mind to render it, to capture some of the designs and moments, and to more effectively — through illustrations — add to the overall narrative and experience of Six String Samurai.
THE STORY……
I thought about if the film was broken up into six parts with animated intros to help the narrative and add a little bit more to the various gangs and villainous bad dudes that occupy the story — short animated comic book-like sequences, very much like the O-Ren Ishii sequence from Kill Bill.
AND WHAT ABOUT
Trading cards? What if there were Six String Samurai trading cards? What on green earth would they look like? Design them to call into the aesthetic of the 90’s, including subsets of the animated sequences and additional artwork. I know the hottest of hot sellers.
Okay, maybe my hesitation was unfounded, because I may have motivated myself to get to work. What’s one more project after all?
This keeps your enthusiastic, stream-of-consciousness style while making it much cleaner and more readable. Let me know if you want any sections adjusted further!
