For a lightning-fast sketch, this Black Costume Spider-Man is pure Peter A. DeLuca alchemy—I pulled two wildly different references and smashed them together in a way that only makes sense inside my head. Sometimes these mashups feel like they were always destined to collide, like long-lost ideas that finally become friends in the chaos of my brain. Serendipitous? Maybe. But to me, it’s pure magic.

The foundation comes from Jean Giraud (Moebius)’s iconic take on Spider-Man: our friendly neighborhood web-head reimagined in a stark, dystopian monolith-rock wasteland. This is Spider-Man stripped down to something primal—the SPIDER in Spider-Man dominates, lurking like an alien predator amid endless barren crags. It’s a portrayal that was groundbreaking even in its era; Marvel never quite went this far into cosmic isolation and menace with the character.

Then I layered on the vibrant coloring technique straight out of the 1990s Spider-Man: The Animated Series black suit era—those electric neon blue and hot pink highlights that rim the symbiote suit, making it glow and pop against the darkness like a living energy field. It’s a look that was bold, futuristic, and completely underused after the show. No one else has captured that glowing, almost cyberpunk rim-lighting on the black suit quite like they did.
The result? A Spider-Man who’s equal parts ancient arachnid horror and neon-charged ’90s icon—dystopian grit meets electric pop. Only I would see these two references and think, “Yeah, they belong together.” But, then again, it’s just a fast sketch.
