Inspired by the iconic commercial illustrations of Patrick Nagel and my lifelong passion for drawing on just about anything, I decided to bring Wonder Woman to life on my drawing table. This fusion was a wildly thrilling concept for me at the time.
While Nagel wasn’t new to the comic book world—his bold, Art Deco-influenced aesthetic (with its clean lines, flat colors, and striking portraits of powerful women) had already influenced many illustrators by the 80s and beyond—this was my first time applying his distinctive style directly to Wonder Woman. I set out to challenge myself, focusing especially on the dynamic application of white splattered acrylic paint to simulate the shimmering, almost electric power radiating from her iconic gauntlets and Lasso of Truth.
The result felt electric: the classic Nagel woman—confident, stylized, and timeless—reimagined as the Amazonian warrior princess, with those signature bold outlines and pops of energy through the splatters. It was a fun experiment in blending retro commercial illustration vibes with superhero mythology.
I’m excited to continue this series and explore more female characters in this Nagel-inspired lens—whether it’s other DC icons or Marvel heroines.
