Green Lantern: First Flight (2009) Review: The Best Hal Jordan Origin Story Still Holds Up
In this Film Buff review, Peter A. DeLuca (AKAPAD) breaks down Green Lantern: First Flight (2009), the first full-length animated origin for Hal Jordan outside the comics. Written by DC animation veteran Alan Burnett and directed by Lauren Montgomery, the film delivers cosmic scope, sharp character work for Hal and Sinestro, inventive alien designs, and Guardian banter that live-action versions have rarely matched. If you’re coming from the 2011 Ryan Reynolds movie or HBO Max’s Lanterns series, this is the one that still feels like the real Green Lantern Corps on screen.
Why Green Lantern: First Flight Remains a Landmark in Superhero Animation
Summary
This video offers an in-depth look at Green Lantern: First Flight (2009), a pivotal animated film that stands out as the first full-length Hal Jordan origin story beyond the comics. The host, AKAPAD, known for his pop culture expertise, discusses the film’s significance against the backdrop of Green Lantern’s long but uneven history in popular culture since his debut in 1940. Emphasizing the challenges of adapting Green Lantern’s complex and often “goofy” mythology for a broader audience, the host celebrates the film’s faithful storytelling, impressive character development—especially of Hal Jordan and Sinestro—and its rich animation style that captures the cosmic, sci-fi essence of the Lantern universe.
The discussion also contrasts First Flight with other Green Lantern adaptations, including the divisive 2011 live-action movie starring Ryan Reynolds and the mature-themed HBO Max series. The video praises First Flight for its compelling narrative arcs, including the origins of the Green Lantern Corps, the Guardians of the Universe’s character banter, and the birth of Sinestro’s evil Yellow Lanterns. Ultimately, the film is positioned as a standout animation blending superhero tropes and sci-fi adventure with emotional, character-driven storytelling, worthy of recognition and viewing by fans and newcomers alike.

Key Insights
- 🌟 Legacy and Longevity of Green Lantern: Green Lantern being introduced just two years after Batman and Superman yet lacking the same cultural foothold highlights how difficult his mythos is to adapt. The 69-year gap before a full cinematic portrayal of his origin underlines the complexities of translating his story to wider audiences.
- 🎨 Importance of Animation for Complex Stories: Animation offers the freedom to depict alien worlds, intricate technology, and fantastical powers that live-action adaptations often struggle to realize convincingly. This medium suits Green Lantern’s cosmic scope perfectly, allowing for imaginative creature designs and vivid action sequences that deepen viewer engagement.
- ⚖️ Balance of Character Depth and Mythology: The film balances Hal Jordan’s heroic yet flawed persona with the elaborate lore of the Green Lantern Corps. The focus on Sinestro’s fall from hero to villain adds crucial narrative weight and sets up future conflicts central to Green Lantern mythology.
- 📚 Role of Veteran Writers: Alan Burnett’s involvement as a seasoned DC animation writer enriches the screenplay with authenticity and respect for the source material. His experience since Batman: The Animated Series ensures First Flight captures the heroic and moral complexities inherent in DC’s universe.
- 🛠️ Adaptation Challenges Reflect Broader Franchise Issues: The varying depictions of how Hal Jordan inherits the ring reflect the franchise’s inconsistent storytelling. This ambiguity presents difficulties for casual viewers and underlines why certain Green Lantern stories resonate better in mediums offering more narrative space.
- 😲 Contrast with Other Green Lantern Media: The 2011 live-action movie failed to capture the essence and complexity of the character, whereas the HBO Max series, with its mature tone and gritty realism, represents a new direction. This animated film remains a middle ground that appeals for its faithful, family-friendly approach.
- 👥 Character Dynamics Enrich the Story: The Guardians’ quirky personalities and internal conflicts add a layer of humor and intrigue rarely explored in Green Lantern adaptations, highlighting their pivotal role in the narrative and offering a subtle commentary on authority and control.

Camera speed, sound production, take one. >> Action. >> Hello, hello. We are here to buff some films, aka Padders. It’s a film buff, Peter A. DeLuca. Now, if you’re new here, around the internet, I’m known as aka Pad, aka Pad. I’m known as the pop culture pope. I’m known as the eclectic one. And I come to you the greatest city in the world, Philadelphia. And I live not even a mile away from one of the best structures, one of the greatest structures this country’s
00:00:41
ever erected, the Philadelphia City Hall. It’s it’s absolutely beautiful. I love walking by it. I walk by a couple times a week, sometimes a few times a day. So, welcome to the show. It’s Monday night and we’re talking We’re doing live Green Lantern stuff on Monday night. Now, I already informed the entire internet that we will be doing animation during the weekdays. Usually, animation is reserved for the weekends, but not this time. And the reason is for that, we have so much more Green Lantern
00:01:18
animation content to get to than we do live action. Live action, it’s the Lantern show right now on HBO Max that is dividing fandom and the internet. People are just losing their minds about Lanterns. And the 2011 Ryan Reynolds movie. And that’s it. So, we go back to 2009 with the release of this. And we got to point something We got to point out something fantastic and something immensely important. And you can compare a lot of this animated film. Let’s get the writers down, cuz I I
00:01:58
always feel like the writers are important when we talk about animation. Alan Burnett and Michael Alan. Alan Burnett, we know him from DC animation from the Batman the Animated Series days. He is in my view superhero animation Hall of Fame or royalty. So why why is this? Like why why am I magnifying First Flight? Why is it important? This is the first time we got a full Hal Jordan story outside the comics. The character I I falsely before when I spoke about Green Lantern as a character, let me look this up.
00:02:46
Sorry guys, we’re we’re going to Google real quick. I said the Green Lantern as a character, his first I said his first appearance previously maybe 1953, 1954. I was way off. His first appearance is 1940. Only a couple years after Superman and Batman. I think ’38 we got Superman, ’39 we got Batman and ’40 we get Green Lantern. 1940 to 2009. That’s one of the longest stretches of a character not as popular as Green Lantern not penetrating the pop culture. Now also previously I’ve done somewhat
00:03:38
of a analysis of the Green Lantern franchise episode where my contention for that and I I believe Green Lantern 2009 First Flight holds up to it. Like it holds up this theory where the idea of the Green Lantern is so goofy and wacky, it’s really hard to adapt. It’s and it’s hard to bring to a to broader general audience. I think it’s great for kids. I I really do. But beyond that, I don’t think this franchise has much hope, which is why I enjoyed the Lantern show so much cuz
00:04:19
I’m like, man, like it’s bloody, they’re they’re saying the F word, they’re banging, like like they’re making it adult. So, I watched this for the first time with a girl I was dating. And I remember, like, let me just look up. Which is looking up a lot of things here. Let me see if I’m just remembering all of this stuff. Yeah, so 2009. I remember seeing Watchmen with this one girl. And I I go to her house. And I think she had bought the Green Lantern DVD thinking uh we could watch
00:04:57
it for that night. It was It was like kind of cool. And again, around this time, I was not embedded, I was not rolling around with pop culture, but I I may have mentioned it to her. Or maybe like we were walking in Target or something and and I just walked by and said, you know, like this is really important because this is even back then, like the first time we’re getting like a Green Lantern movie, like any type of long form outside the comics. And you watch this, and they bring you through the beats.
00:05:31
And then we get into And the beats are this: Hal Jordan, someone he’s he’s a reckless daring pilot, another alien dies on Earth, the ring finds its its next host, maybe it’s the next best host. This this is where like even the ring finding how is up for dispute. The there’s specifics about that that really rarely ever make any sense. Sometimes the ring picks the next possible candidate or the best person on the planet or the most brave person. Sometimes it uh it would pick the nearest person. I think like someone in
00:06:11
Ryan Reynolds, it was just given to him and then this guy needs to rise to be the hero. It’s confusing. So even within Hal Jordan’s origin, it’s just a like how we how he becomes a Green Lantern, it’s wonky, but you kind of have to go along with it. And this story here that we’re told, we’re brought into the Green Lantern Corps where the Corps is trying to solve a problem. They’re trying to reverse engineer some alien shenanigans. Along the way, Sinestro, who at the time is
00:06:45
their greatest next to Abin Sur who recently died. >> [laughter] >> And also by the way, ever since the Green Lantern Corps encounters Hal Jordan, it just it goes downhill. They lose their greatest Abin Sur to him. The next main not becomes evil. That’s Sinestro. So First Flight is also Sinestro’s like evil origin. The birth of the Yellow Lanterns or the the the Lanterns of fear. >> [snorts] >> And then Hal Jordan eventually kills every >> [laughter] >> kills everyone
00:07:24
and becomes the the the greatest villain in all the universe, this guy named Parallax. So we get all the Green Lantern Corps, Kilowog in here who who is probably the second or third most popular Green Lantern. He has a a good moments. The origin, the fight at the end, Sinestro rising to power, how they defeat Sinestro, and then we get I think the the greatest addition to this is the Guardians and the personality of the Guardians and the banter of the Guardians and they kind of like push and pull against each other.
00:08:03
Very entertaining. Green Lantern First Flight feels very Star Wars. It feels very Star Wars with a guy with a ring that can fly around. What they’re trying to do, the aliens that they’re up against, it all works perfectly for animation. Some of the alien creature designs in here I absolutely loving including these like tentacle guys that have feathers they can go invisible. Really cool stuff. I still feel when it comes to Hal Jordan’s story arc beginning where we know he’s going to to be cuz
00:08:46
that’s significant. Cuz like Hal Jordan eventually succumbs to fear which makes him such a perfectly tragic character. I think this is the best we’ve seen Green Lantern on screen period. That includes the 2011 Ryan Reynolds movie. That includes everything happening on HBO Max right now. Check this out though. It deserves your attention. It’s on HBO Max right now. I love you guys. Rock and roll. >> Okay, that’s a wrap. >> [applause]
Green Lantern: First Flight remains one of the strongest DC Universe Animated Original Movies because it treats the mythos with both respect and energy. Animation lets the Corps, the constructs, and the space-opera scale breathe in a way live-action still struggles with. Stream it on Max, then compare it to the current Lanterns series.
